Looking to escape the heat and enjoy a day at the museum? Head to the Cincinnati Museum Center to experience Da Vinci – The Genius.
You’re probably aware that the Cincinnati Museum Center / Union Terminal is currently in the midst of a renovation project to help save the building for future generations. BUT what you may not know is they will have a few more exhibits this year (Da Vinci – The Genius being one of them). And the Children’s Museum will remain open for the duration of the renovation.
Going into the exhibit, I have to admit that I knew very little about the numerous inventions of Da Vinci. I did, of course, know of/about the Mona Lisa and the Vitruvian Man and was interested to learn what could possibly make up an entire exhibition on the works of Da Vinci.
What a brilliant scientific mind Leonardo Da Vinci had! I had no idea of the depth of his “genius”. This exhibit will take you all through Da Vinci’s many scientific and engineering masterpieces as well as the process behind his artwork.
Da Vinci was a master of creation. The legacy of his genius is preserved primarily in his codices – tiny notebooks of categorized drawings and writings on a multitude of subjects, including designs for his inventions. But while the designs are all there on paper, he didn’t actually build many of his most brilliant inventions.
The exhibit has 17 gallery spaces and features over 200 pieces including life-size reproductions of over 70 machine inventions and as well as an in-depth analysis of his most famous work, the “Mona Lisa.”
Using the page of his codices, Italian artisans have reproduced some of da Vinci’s most revolutionary inventions using the same techniques and materials from the Renaissance period. Among the reproductions are some of modern society’s most impactful inventions such as the helicopter, airplane, automobile, submarine, parachute, bicycle and military tank… all conceived by da Vinci centuries before they became commonplace items.
Da Vinci – The Genius is an interactive exhibit. You’ll find lots of hands on displays throughout the galleries. You can push, pull, and crank many of the machines and get a true feel for the brilliant mind of this inventor.
They have a number of visual displays as well. Have fun at the touch screen learning centers (below) or immerse yourself in the video playing on the large screen and watch the short clips on the screens throughout the exhibit.
I can highly recommend getting in to see Da Vinci – The Genius at the Cincinnati Museum Center. I think you’ll come away with a new understanding of what it really means to be a Renaissance Man!
