I saw The Play That Goes Wrong on Broadway last December and can honestly say it was one of the funniest shows I’ve ever seen. It’s slapstick comedy at its finest.
There’s so much RIGHT about The Play That Goes Wrong. Here are my 5 reasons you should go see it when it comes to Cincinnati (Nov. 27 – Dec. 2).
1. You can’t argue with Star Wars producer J.J. Abrams (and he thinks it’s great)!
It seems we have J.J. Abrams (of Star Wars fame) to thank for bringing this comedy to the United States. “I was in London shooting The Force Awakens,” Abrams tells Playbill. “I had a free night, and I looked to see what was playing. I thought, ‘That sounds funny.’ I went to the theatre, and I had never laughed that hard. I hadn’t seen an audience laugh that hard. I remember asking the producers afterward, ‘What are your plans?’ They looked at me like I was crazy. Their plan was just that the show not fail.” (source: PLAYBILL)
2. The Broadway show was produced by a CCM Grad!
J.J. Abrams paired up with Broadway veteran and CCM grad, Kevin McCollum (In the Heights, Avenue Q, Rent, and one of my all-time favorites – Something Rotten) to produce the show on Broadway.
Listen in for my interview with Kevin…
3. It’s a night full of belly laughs – and who doesn’t need an evening like that!
Expect NOTHING serious… and prepare to laugh from start to finish. The actors have amazing timing and are masters of physical comedy.
I immediately thought of Tim Conway and Harvey Korman (The Carol Burnett Show) when I saw the play. Broadway likes to describe it as “what would happen if Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python had an illegitimate Broadway baby.” How could that NOT be funny?!
4. It’s a show the whole family will love.
This is a show that people of all ages will enjoy. The show is full of comedy on every level. This comedy is so SMART and fun. There is lots and lots of physical humor and silliness that will appeal to the younger crowd. Things fall inadvertently fall off the walls (again and again). People get hit by doors and then get up and carry on as if everything is normal. Adults will also pick up on the fact that when they say everything goes wrong, they mean EVERYTHING.
5. I’m not the only one who loved it. Just look at these stellar reviews for The Play That Goes Wrong…
“COMIC GOLD!” (Variety)
“A RIOTOUS EXPLOSION OF COMEDY!” (The Daily Beast)
“TONS OF FUN FOR ALL AGES!” (HuffPost)
“MADCAP MANIA WITH MONTY PYTHON IN ITS BLOOD. IT CRANKS THE CHAOS UP TO 11!” (Associated Press)
The show won a Tony Award for Best Set Design (well deserved!).
Broadway World awarded it “Best New Play” in 2015.
And it’s an Olivier Award winner.
