Day 26 – Taste of Belgium OTR

It’s Day 26 (year 2) of “365 Things to do in Cincinnati” and today we are featuring Taste of Belgium’s Belgian Bistro.

You might be familiar with Taste of Belgium. They’re the ones who make those incredible waffles at Findlay Market.  If you like all that they do at their shop at Findlay (and who wouldn’t?!), you’re in for quite a surprise.

Taste of Belgium recently opened their new “Belgian Bistro” in the Gateway Quarter of Over the Rhine.  I don’t know quite what I was expecting in this new little bistro… but it definitely exceeded my expectations the minute I walked in the door.  The place is much bigger than I anticipated.  You enter at the corner and walk into a U shaped area.  Immediately ahead is a counter full of amazing desserts (more on that below).  Off to the right is the bar area and dining tables.

And to the left… a great little surprise.  Walk around the dessert counter and you’ll see a long counter where you can sit and watch the cooks and chefs prepare all kinds of incredible food – from desserts to main courses.  And check out the chandelier above the work table!

We went to Taste of Belgium’s Belgian Bistro for lunch today.  And I will say that was worth breaking the diet for!  I threw the diet out the window and went with their Chicken and Waffles as I’d heard it was really good. I think it goes beyond that!  It was amazing.  It’s a boneless piece of chicken (thin – probably pounded thin) on a plate with one of their signature waffles and (did they know I was on a diet?) a tiny bit of salad on the side (really more of a garnish).  Atop all that was the most yummy sauce.  It’s kind of a sweet hot sauce if you can imagine that.  It’s not terribly hot but it definitely has a kick.  It really put the meal over the top for me.

They also offer a nice selection of crepes.  My husband ordered something called the Cincinnati Crepe (may have a more unique name – I forgot to take a menu as we left and now I don’t remember!).  The crepe was thin and wonderful, full of fried goetta strips, red and green peppers… and more (again, I forgot to take a menu!).  Trust me when I say it was DELISH!

And don’t miss the dessert case!  Seriously.  Look at these babies…

And that’s just a few of the many desserts they have.  I could not put another thing in my mouth after that Chicken and Waffles lunch but you better believe I will be making a stop in there just to sample some of the wonderful things in that case!

I would highly recommend you try out the new Belgian Bistro.  They currently offer breakfast and lunch service.  They will be open for dinner soon as well.

In addition to that, they offer catering services including boxed lunches, pastry and breakfast trays, a waffle station and more.

Taste of Belgium’s Belgian Bistro is located at the corner of 12th and Vine (1135 vine street)
