Charlie and the Chocolate Factory Comes to Cincinnati

It’s not often that you see a show on Broadway and then see the touring show and like the touring show BETTER…. but that’s the case for me with Broadway in Cincinnati’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a “sweet” new touring production and Cincinnati is one of the first few cities to get to see it. I saw the show this week and will say the cast is fantastic, well-rehearsed, and you’d never know that we’re an early stop on the tour. charlie and the chocolate factory in cincinnati The show basically follows the story line of the beloved Roald Dahl classic. Charlie Bucket is a child who lives with his mother and four-grandparents-in-a-bunk-bed, all within a small, run-down city apartment. Charlie wants nothing more than to win the Golden Ticket in a Wonka bar… and he does! Charlie joins four other children (and chaperones) for a tour of the Wonka Factory. And that’s where things get a little crazy! Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in Cincinnati You’ll tap your toes to songs from the original film including Pure Imagination, The Candy Man, and I’ve Got a Golden Ticket. You’ll recognize the names of the characters but most of them did get a “modern day refresh” for the production. I don’t want to reveal any spoilers so let’s just say you will enjoy the characters!
Noah Weisberg plays Willy Wonka and WOW did he have big shoes to fill! Most of us have seen the original movie starring Gene Wilder. And Christian Borle (Peter and the Starcatcher, Something Rotten, and many more) played the role on Broadway. I saw the show on Broadway and MUCH prefer Noah as Willy Wonka (vs. Christian). Noah has great presence as Willy Wonka. He brings a bit of dead pan humor  to the role (à la Gene Wilder), he’s engaging, and he is totally believable as Willy Wonka.

Noah Weisberg’s father invited me to come meet him after the show. So sweet!
