It’s Day 8 (Year 2) of “365 Things to do in Cincinnati” and today we spent the afternoon in New Richmond watching the Cardboard Boat Regatta.
The Cardboard Boat Regatta is an annual event and is part of New Richmond’s RiverDays (August 17-19,2018). We stood along the New Richmond shore of the Ohio River and watched as race after race took place. They had enough cardboard boats to run 13 rounds of preliminary races!
The cardboard boat race takes place along a 200 yard course on the Ohio River shoreline. As you may have guessed, the boats are made from cardboard. Actually, the boat hull and seating must be made with corrugated cardboard, and/or tape and paint. The mechanical devices can contain other materials but they can not contribute to the reinforcement of the boat. In addition, these mechanical devices can’t be attached in any way to the hull of the boat. The boats can be powered by kayak paddles, canoe paddles or muscle power.
The cardboard boat races started off with single crew boats. After those races were done they moved onto multi-crew boats. Both single crew and multi crew races were divided up into youth races and adult races.
Most boats eventually made it across the finish line but a few did capsize…
Lucky for those boys, there was the “Titanic Award” given to the “most spectacular sinking”. I’m not sure if they won it but they definitely deserved an award for their efforts. They tried and tried to get back in and finish. And even though they couldn’t get back into the boat to paddle across the finish line they came out with smiles on their faces.
After all of the single and multi crew races took place they ran a race for pedaled boats. These boats were in the “Paddle Wheeler Category”. This was a fun race to watch. The boats were BIG and tough to maneuver. Channel 12’s boat went way off course, nearly running into a “real” boat along the edge of the raceway. The boat welcomed him, handed him a beer, and helped get him back on track (well, that and a helper who swam over and pulled him back on course).
It was a great day to be in New Richmond. This is a wonderful event for the entire family. It’s a celebration of all that’s enjoyable about being a river town. New Richmond’s Riverdays festival also includes lots of activities up on the road above the Ohio River banks as well.
You’ll find all kinds of great “fair type” eats like Funnel Cakes, Fried Pies and Nachos as well as grilled burgers and dogs. Many of the New Richmond cafes and diners are open along the strip as well. They have a few kiddie rides and vendor booths like this booth with alpacas from the New Richmond Alpaca Farm…
New Richmond RiverDays continues on through the weekend (August 17-19, 2018). The activity list can be found here: New Richmond RiverDays Schedule.
