Day 18 – Broadway Across America’s Beauty and the Beast

It’s Day 18 (Year 2) of “365 Things to do in Cincinnati” and today we’re featuring an exciting show that’s in town for just a few short weeks – Beauty and the Beast.

Live at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, Beauty and the Beast is the first in a spectacular line up of shows which make up the 2011/2012 Broadway in Cincinnati series.   Beauty and the Beast will run for just two weeks (Sept. 27 – Oct. 9, 2011) and will be followed by many other spectacular shows such as Wicked, Mama Mia, Les Mis, West Side Story and more.

Our family includes a daughter so we’ve seen the Disney version of this tale a time or two.  The live production follows the Disney movie very closely, with wonderful costumes and fantastic musical numbers.  It was fun to hear all of the same songs and story lines.  The live orchestra makes it particularly special.

The show lasts about 2 1/2 hours with an intermission about 2/3 of the way through.  The first half of the show really sets the stage for the entire story and is full of song and dance numbers.  My personal favorite was “Be Our Guest” which was simply incredible.  And the “Gaston song” (pictured in the crowd scene above) was so well choreographed.  The second half of the show seemed to focus more on the drama of the show (Gaston and The Beast battles, etc.).

The main characters were very well portrayed by the cast.  “Belle” actually sounded like the Disney version.  “Gaston” was hilarious and the actor did a great job in making us understand his macho demeanor.

If you’re taking young children along, I think they did a great job of keeping the more scary parts (the wolves in the woods, the fight to the death between Gaston and The Beast) pretty tame.  There were lots of kids in the audience and we saw nothing but smiles.  And be sure to pick up a big padded booster seat before you enter the theatre for your little one (supplied by the Aronoff).

Beauty and The Beast is playing at The Aronoff from Sept. 27 til October 9, 2011.  You can purchase tickets at Broadway Across America.

Broadway Across America has given us a little prize pack to giveaway.  It includes: a Beauty and the Beast souvenir program, coffee mug, lapel pin, show poster and Broadway in Cincinnati pen.   If you’d like to win that prize pack be sure to leave a comment on this post telling us your thoughts on Beauty and the Beast.  And just to be clear… this giveaway does NOT include tickets – we couldn’t swing that one!

I love beauty and the beast. I plan on going to the show. I always loved all the songs on the Disney movie. I love my boys but I was sad to not have a little girl so she could share my love for all the Disney princesses. :)

Beauty and the Beast is my all time favorite movie and story ever. A few years ago I was in the percussion section of the pit during my high school production of the show…you could find me playing timpani with tears streaming down my face at the end of each night…I’m such a sap. I am expecially lucky to finally be seeing the broadway show next week and I’ll probably be bawling my eyes out through the entire thing!

We saw they play Wednesday night and it was terrific. Gaston”s song was choregraphed so well you laughed all the way through.(tankard clinking was syncronized perfectly). One of the best productions I have ever been to. Loved it!
