Here we are with another installment of “365 Things to do in Cincinnati” and today we are featuring The Butterfly Show at the Krohn Conservatory.
This is the 17th annual Butterfly Show at the Krohn Conservatory. Each year there is a theme and this year’s theme is “On Wings of Harmony”.
The theme includes harmony which is particularly fitting this year as Cincinnati prepares to host The World Choir Games. The Krohn Conservatory tied the decor for the show in with the theme in many ways, one of which is the use of recycled CD’s to create the “Electric Butterfly” out front as well as using old records to craft the exit from the show itself.
This year’s show includes 16,000 butterflies from six continents (no butterflies from Antartica believe it or not).
The show features some new displays this year. This is my third year to see the show and I will say I think it’s the best one as far as the decor goes. There’s a 10 foot recycled aluminum dome at one end (see pic below) and the butterflies fly in and out of it. Multi-colored streamers adorn the “ceiling”. And be sure to watch for the butterfly shaped plantings. I missed them until I heard someone else point them out.
The Butterfly Show has many special events happening over the next few months including Butterfly Happy Hours, free admission for Moms on Mother’s Day (thanks to Macy’s), Photo Nights and Photo Morning, Breakfast with the Butterflies, free admissions for Dads on Father’s Day (thanks to Macy’s), and Schools Out Week activities for kids.
This is definitely a family friendly event. You can pick up paper flowers at the doors (for use in getting the butterflies to land on your card). The kids really like those.
Be sure to take your camera. You can get up close and personal with the butterflies and your pictures will be amazing!
The Butterfly Show is at the Krohn Conservatory from April 21 through June 24, 2012.
Admission to the Butterfly Show is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $4 for children 5 and over, children 4 and under are free.
You can purchase a Butterfly Show pin for $10 and that will get you unlimited admission for the show.
Family Packs are also available for $20 (includes admission for 2 adults and up to 6 children)
The Krohn Conservatory is located at 1501 Eden Park Drive
