In our continuing list of “365 Things to do in Cincinnati“, we’d like to present you with a rather unusual experience…. the Art of Hair.
Take a close look at the picture above…. those aren’t hats on their heads. That is hair! The Art of Hair is an exhibition at The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center. The exhibition opened last Sunday with the Art of Hair Opening Reception which included a runway style show full of models with “original artistic hair designs by stylists from some of the areas top salons.” (quoted from the Carnegie’s site)
I really didn’t know what to expect – this was my first visit to the Art of Hair. The first thing to surprise me was the crowd! This reception drew a boat-load of people! Seriously, people were arriving in droves to see the show…. and once you see the fashion show component, you’ll understand why.
I was dumbfounded by how the salons turned these ladies’ (and a few gents’) hair into true works of art. It was a stunning (and super fun!) show!
The runway show is there just on opening day. But you can still go to see the Art of Hair exhibit that goes throughout the upstairs at the Carnegie and includes all kinds of “hair related” art. The exhibit itself is free (after the opening reception) and will be at the Carnegie until Feb. 10, 2012.
The exhibit features all kinds of different art forms… all having something to do with hair. There’s an entire room full of Barbie heads (the bigger kind where you can make Barbie up).
And there’s a room with hair sculptures (my pics were horrible of those so not included) and hair photography…
And there’s even a room full of vintage hair “equipment” and products. Aren’t you glad you don’t have to dry your hair with this every morning?
I had a great time at The Art of Hair. I will definitely watch for the opening reception to come around again next year. It was a fun way to spend an afternoon, admiring some unconventional art and running into old friends.
