Gilpin’s Steamed Sandwiches

Here we are with another new spot to feature for “365 Things to Do in Cincinnati“.  And because nothing makes me happier than a delicious, piping hot sandwich made with fresh local ingredients, I decided to stop by and visit Gilpin’s Steamed Sandwiches downtown.

As I walked through the front door, I quickly noticed Gilpin’s was not the average bagel shop. I picked up a menu from the counter and thoroughly read all of the dozens of combinations. Everything sounded good, so I asked for a recommendation. Turns out, the man behind the counter was the owner: Brad Gilpin.

Brad explained, “The sandwiches marked with stars are the most popular. Plus, our dry erase wall features combinations that customers have created,” as he gestured to a giant white wall near the door. “And here’s a menu with all of our toppings to create your own.”

I opted to create my own.  I grabbed a dry erase pen and started marking up the menu. I called it The Paigetastic: pretzel bun, roast beef, veggie cream cheese, smoked Gouda, cucumbers, avocado, mushrooms, red onion, and peppercorn dressing.

The meat, cheese, and bun were steamed and served hot with the toppings added afterwards. With flavors becoming more savory with each and every bite, my sandwich was fresh, filling, and hit the spot. Gilpin’s only uses the best ingredients in Cincinnati: breads from Shadeau and meats from Avril’s.  Even their desserts are local – sweets from Donna’s Gourmet Cookies!

The dining area upstairs was full of character. One television had a video of a fireplace on it, complete with a real gate in front of the set. Another TV had a Nintendo available for play (Brad mentioned an Atari is coming soon).  Gilpin’s also uses all-recyclable materials so your sandwich wrapper, cans, and napkins all go into a green trash can.

Craving a late night snack? Gilpin’s is open until 3:00am and offers a “Drunk Menu” which is posted on a gigantic, 6-foot-tall sign. It has five items described in huge letters. All you have to do is say the number. Clever!

With Alkaline Trio playing in the background, Gilpin’s easily joins my list of new favorite eateries in Cincinnati.
